We arrived in Madrid on the 2nd of May, after a 5 hour bus ride from San Sebastian. The first hour of the trip had incredible landscapes, was a bit like what I imagine western Canada would look like which was surprising. Arriving in Madrid, we met a Jess, a friend of Kim’s from Melbourne in the hostel. We headed out for some very average paella (massive disappointment!!), and onto a tapas bar for a Tinto de Verano (massive surprise!!), a yummy mix of red wine, fresh orange, lemon squash and martini, very refreshing indeed!
The following day we headed into the city center (literally 2 minutes from our hostel) for a cheap lunch, a gigantic croissant with fresh ham and cheese for just 1 euro, then did a bit of window shopping. The Prado museum stocked The Table of Seven Deadly Sins and Adam & Eve amongst other very old pieces. In the hostel that night we met 5 crazy but very lovely Swedish guys who had flown to Madrid to celebrate a birthday. In an attempt to keep the destination a surprise from the birthday boy (also called Kim!) they made him wear an eye mask and earplugs, and told airport security that he was afraid of flying and had to take these measures so that he wouldn’t know he was on a plane. They bought this and let them through no worries!
The next morning, was my Kim’s birthday, and she woke to find a lovely note from the Swedish boys saying happy birthday that they had written on their way to bed a 6am! For breakfast we had a surprise whiskey and caramel birthday cake and then headed to the park for a picnic of red vino, guacamole, strawberries, bread and chocolate! Perrrrfect!!
That night we headed to an old favourite bar El Tigre, where the mojitos are the size of my hand, and the tapas were free (although pretty gross).
Later, Kim and a friend Eric went and had a nightcap of Churros and chocolate!
